About the Guide
The goal of this guide is to provide information that is not explained completely with in-game explanations. If the game adequately explains something it will likely be omitted.

Familiarity with the original Elden Ring game is assumed.

Input references in this guide are for Xbox controller layout.

Information may be updated as more is learned.

Charging Abilities
Many abilities including your Ultimate Art can be charged by holding the buttons down, which can deal significantly greater damage.
Passive Inventory Buffs

Weapons provide passive abilities even when unequipped. Carry useful weapons in your six inventory slots regardless of active weapon choice. Magic weapons maintain spell effects (floating swords, fireballs, etc) while stowed, but they won't activate if they are not equipped in either hand (can be on back while two-handing). These are indicated by a red hand icon.

You should always have your weapon slots filled for their buffs, no matter their weapon type, they essentially act as additional talismans. There is no weight mechanic or anything that is a hindrance caused by filling your slots. Dropping them, even if the effect is minor, is simply nerfing yourself.

Don't be like this!

Universal Blocking

All weapons provide 100% physical damage block, functioning as emergency shields regardless of weapon type or character class. However you must still be mindful of stamina loss, as you will take damage while blocking if you run out of stamina.
Consumables
Unlike Elden Ring, Elemental Greases can be applied to weapons that have elemental affinities already, and will not override the existing effect.

If you are currently highlighting an item, and want to use it immediately without first placing it in your inventory (useful if your inventory is full), you can hold Y and press Up on D-pad (H on keyboard) to use the item without picking it up.
Walking Passive Effects
Passive effects from Dormant Powers which indicate "walking" actually do require slower movement, by barely moving the joystick. On keyboard, this can be performed by pressing C.

Accessing the Tutorial

If you did not win against Fell Omen in the tutorial or otherwise skipped it, you can re-access the tutorial by going to the Visual Codex in Roundtable Hold (either physically or through the menu), going to Guide, then pressing X.

Upon defeating the boss, you will receive the Fell Omen Fetish, which can be equipped as a relic:

Fell Omen Fetish
Switching Weapons Boosts Attack Power
Improved Throwing Knife Damage
Vigor +1
How to Defeat the Fell Omen
git gud, scrub
Be sure to use your claw shot often and effectively, you can pull yourself toward the boss or avoid attacks that are hard to dodge as well. Switching to two-handed greatsword for fast and powerful attacks and relying on dodging rather than blocking may also help. Use the pillars to your advantage, as they can block projectiles.

Many of his dangerous attacks can be avoided by keeping your distance until the string of attacks are over, saving yourself the trouble of potentially making a mistake trying to dodge each one individually. If your teammate is downed, the best time to resurrect them is while he is throwing the daggers. Your attacks will be most effective using the standard greatsword because Wylder has a significant passive advantage using them.

Matchmaking
Use the Group Password
steamy
in the Expeditions settings menu if you would like to group with others who have read this.

As of 5/31/2025, if any player in the your team session has a particular status like having an active Event (see Events below), or an active Remembrance Quest, you will only be pooled with people with the same event or have access to remembrance quests.

This is very important to be aware of, as this can potentially cause significantly longer matchmaking queues. For example, if you are trying to queue for the first expedition (Tricephalos) with an active event, most players trying to fight Tricephalos have never done so and will not have an event unlocked yet, and you will likely not find a match quickly.

If you are in a group of two matchmaking for a third, the queue times will be longer as there is a higher demand for solo players to fill a third slot. It may seem non-functional, but this is working.

After you've unlocked additional Expeditions, you may queue for multiple at a time by pressing X.

Pressing the View button provides options:
  • All Options
  • Random (Undefeated)
  • Copy Last Expedition Settings
Quick Pinning

You can press Left Stick + Y to place a pin at your current location. If you are highlighting an item, this will place a ping on that item.
Skipping Cutscenes

If all 3 players press the Menu button, the intro cutscene will be skipped.
Reconnecting
Disconnected players can rejoin the same lobby with equipment with progress intact.

Player spawns near party location if remaining teammates survive during absence.

If you intentionally disconnect during a match and do not return you will be penalized (according to the warning message when attempting to do so). Unknown penalty at this time.
Single Player
Access single player without going into Offline Mode through Roundtable Hold matchmaking menu:
  1. Select Expeditions menu
  2. Navigate to Matchmaking Settings
  3. Scroll to "Expedition Type" (bottom option)
  4. Choose Single Player

Setting remains active until manually changed. Progress transfers between modes.
Red Player Phantoms

You may encounter red phantoms, which mark the death locations of players from other player's sessions. These phantoms can be looted for the enhanced version of equipment they were carrying, including enhanced versions of starting gear that feature a new passive ability ("[Class] Grief" effects).

The enhanced items provide significant stat bonuses when equipped by characters of the matching class, making it worthwhile to replace your original starting equipment if you stumble upon them.

Solo Revival
In addition to one automatic revival upon defeat per night boss battle, merchants in Limveld and Spirit Shelter each sell Wending Grace in single player expeditions, which allows the player to revive once after death. You can purchase both before the end of Day 2.

Though not guaranteed, this item also appears in multiplayer expeditions either through merchant sales or 🟠Legendary boss rewards.
Alternate Revival Methods
Character Skills that can also help revive teammates:
  • Wylder's Claw Shot: Particularly good to use when your teammate is distant. Does not pull either player.
  • Wylder's Onslaught Stake:Can resurrect both teammates if within range and in the same direction.
  • Ironeye's Single Shot: Powerful shot that can hit both teammates if they are aligned, however it does not clear much more than a single segment of the gauge.
  • Raider's Retaliate: Attacks hit in rapid succession which can get a teammate up quickly
  • Guardian’s Wings of Salvation: Its large AoE can resurrect both teammates if they are within its range.
  • Revenant's Immortal March: Similarly large AoE that can resurrect teammates even with full gauges.
*Note: This is not a comprehensive list. Feel free to mention others in the comments and I will update it.
Grace Revival
Reaching a grace while downed restores you to full health and replenishes flasks just as when you are alive, so you should crawl toward one if you happen to be downed nearby.

Core Strategy Overview
Nightreign emphasizes strategic resource acquisition and proper planning. Success is greatly dependent on obtaining the elemental weapons, flask upgrades, and passive abilities efficiently. Each day is 20 minutes, with the first circle closing in completely at 10 minutes.

The following are general suggestions, you should adjust as you see fit based on what you are looking to maximize on.
  • Find Elemental weapons matching Nightlord weakness
  • Gather Flask upgrades from Churches
  • Obtain passive abilities from boss encounters
  • Gain character levels and equipment upgrades as much as possible
  • Fill talismans and weapon slots in inventory even if they aren't very useful

General Location Priority
Locations to prioritize ordered by importance:
  1. Churches
  2. Main Encampments/Ruins/Great Churches
  3. Forts
  4. Evergaols
  5. Castle
  6. Events

World Map
Press Y to display Point of Interest reward information. This shows what is available at each location so you can plan what gear you want to farm, where to find merchants, etc.

You can also view the underground Mine Map by pressing Down on D-pad while the map is open.

Day 1
Objective: Acquire elemental weapons and flask upgrades around the map perimeter (where the circle is likely to close in on)
  • Visit Churches for Flask upgrades and gathering Pickled Fowl Feet
  • If a Church has a merchant and anvil and it's still prior to the first circle, purchase a Smithing Stone [1] and upgrade your weapon from ⚪Common to 🔵Rare
  • Target Ruins and Great Churches on map edges for Elemental weapons
  • Focus on bosses at Ruins and Main Encampments (manageable level 1 encounters), avoid Field Bosses
  • Lower priority on Forts (inconsistent drops), and avoid The Castle (higher difficulty)
  • Use Golden Pickled Fowl Foot before boss fights for bonus runes
  • Use Silver Pickled Fowl Foot before opening chests for better loot

Elemental Weapon Locations: Check map details for Elemental icons near Ruins. Great Churches often contain Elemental Catalysts and weapons in basement chests.

Day 2
Objective: Upgrade your best Elemental weapon, then face higher difficulty bosses
  • Priority 1: Upgrade elemental weapon at Mines (🟣Epic) and if possible Magma Crater (🟠Legendary)
  • Priority 2: Farm bosses at locations like Forts and Great Churches for passive abilities and character levels
  • Priority 3: Field Bosses and Castle encounters if time permits
Nightlord Weaknesses
Each Nightlord has a specific elemental weakness that causes extra damage and extended stagger animations. Some additionally have melee weaknesses:

Characters
Guardian
Wylder is a character with a balanced Strength build. Replace buckler with heavy two-handed weapons. Use grappling hook for backstabs and ultimate ability setup.
Notes: Can animation-cancel Grappling Hook into backstabs by pressing direction + attack at exact moment of contact.
Best Attributes: HP (A), Strength (A)
Guardian is a Guard Counter specialist with defensive focus. Limited mobility but high survivability potential.
Notes: Consider elemental maces or greatswords over default halberds. Guard countering can be challenging in co-op scenarios. Dodge has significantly fewer i-frames than others.
Best Attributes: HP (S), Stamina (A)
Ironeye is a ranged DPS character with a marking ability that boosts team damage. Lower damage output but excellent safety and team support.
Notes: Most reliable for reviving teammates and maintaining distance from bosses. Marking boosts team damage.
Best Attributes: Dexterity (A), Stamina (B), Arcane (B)
Raider is a pure Strength build character. Focus on colossal weapons and poise damage. Pummel ability is excellent for breaking enemy stance.
Notes: Can dual-wield colossal weapons with practice.

Best Attributes: Strength (S), HP (A), Stamina (A)
Recluse is a hybrid caster with S-rank in both Faith and Intelligence. Self-sufficient FP recovery allows sustained casting.
Notes: Don't limit to Sorceries only - utilize both Incantations and Sorceries for maximum versatility.

Best Attributes: Intelligence (S), Faith (A), FP (A)
Executor is a parry-focused melee character. Build cursed blade charges through successful parries. Ultimate provides poise damage but limited actual damage.
Notes: Requires comfort with Sekiro-style parrying mechanics. Consider other classes if parrying isn't your preferred playstyle.
Best Attributes: Dexterity (S), Arcane (S)
Revenant
Duchess is a hybrid support caster. Stack FP recovery passives, use dagger attacks to recover FP, then cast spells. Use Restage to double spell damage.
Notes: Despite her description, she's designed as a caster, not a melee character. Focus on spells and FP management.
Best Attributes: Intelligence (A), FP (B), Dexterity (B), Faith (B)
Revenant is a support caster with summon abilities. Use Bow for safe FP recovery and spell casting. Ultimate revives entire party even at a full gauge.
Notes: Focus on support role rather than melee combat. Summons are effective for distraction but vulnerable to Nightlords.
Best Attributes: Faith (S), FP (A)

Other Notes
Dormant Powers

Gradual Restoration by Flask: Be aware that this dormant power grants a heal-over-time and completely removes its instant-heal effect. This may be more viable if you have an alternative method of instant healing i.e. the Urgent Heal incantation. A lack of instant recovery can be detrimental when you need to heal and might take a large blow shortly after. There are benefits such as preventing overhealing in some cases, or not having to heal twice in succession if hit multiple times, however it is not recommended unless you know what you're doing.

Resource Management Tips
  • Boss encounters provide comprehensive power growth (Runes + Abilities + Gear)
  • Trash mobs primarily offer Rune gains
  • Time management is critical, try not to idle or backtrack
  • Purchase pouch expansions from merchants for more consumable capacity
  • Complete character story missions for unique Relics and Urns
  • Prioritize HP/FP recovery Relics over minor stat bonus Relics

General Tips
  • Match your playstyle to character strengths (parrying for Executor, casting for Duchess, etc.)
  • Prioritize Elemental weapons over preferred weapon types for effectiveness
  • Focus on boss encounters over mob farming for efficient progression
  • Consider team composition when choosing your character, but it's better to play something you are comfortable with

Church
Churches have an altar you can interact with to increase your number of flasks by 1 which makes these the highest priority to visit. 3-5 appear per run (3 being the most common, 5 being very rare, in my case 1/35).
Main Encampment
Main Encampments have many enemies and are great for farming runes quick and early. These can have relatively easy bosses that are usually consisting of multiple enemies as a single encounter. Bow racks are consistently found here and may be prioritized if someone is playing Ironeye in particular.
Fort
Forts have regular enemies and always have an easy boss, and chests in this area have a high chance of giving a Stonesword Key, which are used to access Evergaols. On the top floor is usually a glowing map on a table, which reveals the location of nearby Scarabs.
Ruin
Ruins have many chests with good loot. Ruins or Forts are good to quickly upgrade at low risk, making these higher priority. These may also contain an easy boss.
Great Church
Great Churches always have a boss and not too many enemies. If it it has a basement, the boss will be within it. A chest may be in this area which likely contain a Stonesword Key. Many of these bosses are relatively easy and can be defeated solo (not that you should ditch your teammates).
Sorcerer's Rise
Sorcerer's Rises may be prioritized if you or someone in your party is playing as Recluse, as powerful staffs are held at the top of these towers. In order to access a Sorcerer's Rise, you must find and break a seal located near the tower's entrance. This seal may be hidden within a bush, tree stump, or other seemingly innocuous object.
Evergaol
Evergaols (pronounced ever-jail) have varying difficulty based on player level, with many providing a unique type of Dormant Power that lets you simply obtain extra runes (in addition to the base runes provided by defeating the boss itself). This comes in three tiers, determined by average player level of the team:

Tier 1:
🔵 Rune of the Strong (10,000 Runes)
Random 🔵Rare (or greater) Dormant Power
Tier 2:
🟣 Rune of the Strong (20,000 Runes)
Random 🟣Epic (or greater) Dormant Power
Tier 3:
Random 🟣Epic (or greater) Dormant Power
Random 🟣Epic (or greater) Dormant Power
Random 🟣Epic (or greater) Dormant Power

In addition to reduced rewards, Evergaol bosses have their health and base rune reward reduced either 50% or 25% depending on how low level players are during the encounter.

The Oldest Evergaol drops a unique set:
🟠 Rune of the Strong (30,000 Runes)
Random 🟣Epic (or greater) Dormant Power

Possible Bosses
Beastly Brigade
Beastmen of Farum Azula
Grave Warden Duelist
Omen
Nox Warriors
Crucible Knight
Death Rite Bird
Godskin Noble & Apostle
*Note: This is not a comprehensive list.
Tunnel Entrance
Tunnel Entrances are good if you are looking to upgrade, as the elite enemy drops (the option of a) Smithing Stone [2], which is used to upgrade a 🔵Rare item to 🟣Epic at an anvil. It is easy to get stuck inside while the circle closes in, so time your entry appropriately.
Castle
The Castle is always in the center of the map, and always has a merchant around it. This has strong enemies and are best to farm on Day 2. There are two boss encounters within the castle: one located in the center beneath the broken bridge, and a second positioned at the castle's highest point.

The upper boss offers 🟣Epic tier loot with a high 🟠Legendary drop chance, though it is a significantly greater challenge and is recommended for Day 2 attempts. If you want to maximize upgrades, you may want to skip all the enemies and run straight to boss below as it is quick to access with little risk. Be aware that there can be trolls that throw massive pots at you, so do not stand idle while in their line of sight.

In addition to the two bosses, elites in the area also drop upgrades, making it a great area to gather during endgame.
Field Boss
Field Bosses are very powerful but greatly rewarding.
Township
Townships are locations you can reliably find a merchant, and have a greater inventory than other merchants. You are more likely to find one selling a Smithing Stone [2], and very rarely a Wending Grace.
Spectral Hawk Tree
Spectral Hawk Trees send players on a hawk along a path across a great distance. Be careful about using these while the circle is closing, and pay attention to the direction indicated by its blue effect and on the map, as it can potentially be headed outside the circle. While you can dismount, there is a brief amount of time that you are locked, which is enough to be killed by the out of bounds damage if it's later in the day.
Spritstream
Spiritstreams are used to leap up high cliffs that are otherwise difficult to reach.
Scarab
Scarabs have a high chance of dropping a Talisman, so these are very useful to seek out if you do not yet have two. Only one is dropped per Scarab and are not shared between allies.

Go to a Fort to reveal their locations on your map (see Forts above)
Cracked Statue
Cracked Statues do not seem to change location between matches, but are not marked on the map. In order to destroy these you can lure a boss or elite over to swing at it if there are any nearby, or, depending on the player's class, you may use your Ultimate Art to destroy it as well.

If you are playing as Revenant, you may want to seek out these statues as they may drop Claw weapons. Other rewards include Seals and Smithing Stones.

Shifting Earth Events
Shifting Earth Events are modifications to the map that replace a section with an area that has enhanced reward quality and increased enemy difficulty. These are present throughout an entire expedition.

The final circle positioning favors event locations. You cannot queue for events you have not unlocked. You can however join events you have not unlocked by having a friend invite you who has unlocked it. Sleep in the Waiting Room at Roundtable Hold to skip unwanted events. If you are matchmaking, the host determines the event. If a player has not yet unlocked events, if someone in the party has an active event, it will be active.

Unlock Requirements
The first shifting earth event is unlocked after defeating the first Nightlord. Defeating a certain number of Nightlords unlocks additional events:
