Cooking allows scouts to modify items by means of a source of heat. Most food items benefit from cooking, while cooking non-food items produces various effects and can be both advantageous and detrimental.
In this guide, all status effects, with the exception of
Bonus stamina, are represented by their "tick" values instead of their absolute values, which is more intuitive considering how they're displayed in-game. As a reminder, the stamina bar is composed of 40 ticks.
Lastly, keep in mind that you may find some spoilers here, so be advised!

Cooking an item is usually accomplished by interacting with a fire while holding them. Sources of fire include the campfires, the fire at the crash site, and the
Portable Stove.
Additionally, many explosions will cook items in a set range. These explosions include:
The
Ancient Idol and the
Checkpoint Flag cannot be cooked directly by scouts, but can be cooked by explosions. The
Cactus cannot be cooked at all.
In the Caldera and The Kiln, unless they are inside an equipped
Backpack, items will be cooked by environmental heat sources, including heated ground and pools of lava.
Additionally, many explosions will cook items in a set range. These explosions include:

Items go through the following stages when cooked, but the effects only apply to cooked food items:
Items are cooked by one stage at a time (except for the
Checkpoint Flag, which is cooked by two stages). Pools of lava cook nearby items continuously at a rate based on distance, with a minimum time of approximately 1.43 seconds. This makes consuming Incinerated food exposed to lava, for whatever reason, extremely dangerous, as it can quickly accumulate
Poison.
The
Cooked Bird is precooked and does not occur uncooked. Cooking it once will make it Well-done.
The
Anti-Rope Cannon,
Anti-Rope Spool,
Chain Launcher,
Guidebook,
Piton,
Rescue Claw,
Rope Cannon and
Rope Spool are Incinerated when cooked once, and are rendered unusable.
The
Beehive,
Coconut and
Big Egg transfer their cooking stage to their resulting items when broken.
The
Sports Drink suffers no penalty if beyond Well-done.
The
Blowgun,
Scout Effigy and
Scroll behave like food items when used, granting the user
Bonus stamina if not Burnt (or
Poison if Incinerated).
