Violence.
Violence makes Subnautica easier.
By violence, I mean hunting all leviathans to extinction.
Killing leviathans:
  • eliminates your fear of a leviathan attack (they're all dead!)
  • gets rid of a massive threat (leviathans don't respawn!)
  • ultimately helps you beat the game faster (you don't have to worry about leviathan attacks!)

Helpful resources:
  • the f1 key (it opens a dev UI that happens to show a lot of useful info)
  • http://subnauticamap.io (shows where to find reapers and wrecks!)
  • http://subnautica.fandom.com (if you don't know where to find a specific fragment/databox, this can help!)
  • Doom 1/2/3/2016/Eternal soundtrack (pick the most metal song you can find out of these, put it on loop, and play it when you're fighting leviathans)

Supplies
There are 3 main ways to kill leviathans:
  • Knife/thermoblade and stasis rifle
  • Prawn suit drill arm and Prawn suit grappling hook
  • gas pods / torpedoes

If you'e going to use a knife and thermoblade, pack:
  • An absurd number of fully charged batteries
  • An absurd number of medkits
  • power cells(if you're using a vehicle)
  • repair tool(if you're using a vehicle)
  • a Stasis Rifle
  • a Seaglide
  • Reinforced dive suit (equipped)
  • Ultra High Capacity Oxygen Tank (equipped)
  • Rebreather (equipped)
  • Fins (equipped)
  • Compass (equipped)
  • food + water (survival only)
  • a knife

If you're going to gas the leviathans, pack:
  • stasis rifle
  • batteries
  • a Seaglide
  • Reinforced dive suit (equipped)
  • Ultra High Capacity Oxygen Tank (equipped)
  • Rebreather (equipped)
  • Fins (equipped)
  • Compass (equipped)
  • food + water (survival only)
  • 12 gas pods/torpedoes per reaper
  • 12 gas pods/torpedoes per ghost leviathan
  • 25 gas pods/torpedoes per sea dragon

If you're going to use the prawn suit, pack:
  • Power cells
  • Medkits
  • Batteries
  • a repair tool
  • Enough supplies to kill at least 1 leviathan using the knife if you have to
  • a Seaglide
  • Reinforced dive suit (equipped)
  • Ultra High Capacity Oxygen Tank (equipped)
  • Rebreather (equipped)
  • Fins (equipped)
  • Compass (equipped)
  • food + water (survival only)
  • prawn suit drill arm (optional)
  • prawn suit grappling hook

How to kill with a knife
1. Reach whatever leviathan you want to kill
2. Start playing some metal.
3. Lure it somewhere that makes getting oxygen easier
4. Hit it with the stasis rifle
5. Hit it with a fully charged stasis rifle shot
6. Stab it
7. keep stabbing it
8. stun it again when the effect wears off
9. if you're running low on oxygen, stun the leviathan fully and get oxygen, then stun it again.
10. repeat until it dies
11. feel like a badass
12. Scan it if you want
13. Go find another leviathan
14. repeat
How to kill with the prawn
1. same as before
2. same as before
3. lure the leviathan down to you
4. try to latch on
5. when you're latched on, try to get beside the leviathan
6. drill into it/punch it.
7. if the prawn's low on charge or is below 50% health, repair it or charge it.
8. otherwise, keep drilling/punching.
9. repeat until the leviathan dies.
10. recharge all your power cells and batteries
11. keep killing leviathans
How to kill with gas
Gas pods:
1. same.
2. same.
3. stun the leviathan
4. get right up to its face
5. drop 12 gas pods if it's a reaper, 12 if it's a ghost leviathan, or 25 if it's a sea dragon. (Alternatively, raise a few gasopods and drop em near the leviathan).
6. keep it stunned.

Gas torpedoes:

1. Drive up to the leviathan

2. Shoot the leviathan

Torpedoes will detonate if they hit a gas cloud. Don't fire at the same spot twice, or you'll end up wasting your torpedoes!

3. Repeat step 2 until it dies

Population of each leviathan type
Reaper: 25
Ghost: 6 (+3 located in the void that'll respawn)
Sea Dragon: 3
Tips
  • Get battery + power cell chargers early
  • Aurora reaper leviathans first
  • Get the drill and grappling hook for the prawn suit ASAP
  • Keep a running count
  • have a screenshot of a map with leviathan locations, and cross off ones you've killed
  • Keep your inventory minimal when fighting leviathans
  • Don't take on too many at once.
  • Sometimes, leviathans can go through the ground. Beware of this.
  • When taking on a sea dragon, it's advisable to install the prawn suit thermal reactor upgrade module as well as the standard drill and grapple arms, jump jets, and depth upgrade.
  • Read the comments for additional insight on murdering innocent sea monsters.

  • To repair vehicles while piloting them:
    1. Pull out your repair tool.
2.Enter a seamoth/prawn suit (Open your PDA IMMEDIATELY after hitting Mouse1)
    3. Close your PDA once you are in your seamoth/prawn suit.
    4. If all goes according to plan, you can now repair your seamoth/prawn suit without having to get out! (Unfortunately, drills, claws, torpedo tubes, etc. can't be used if you have the repair tool out.)

and of course, to defeat the leviathans, drill them until they die.

Other ways idiots have killed leviathans
  • Propulsion cannon and gas pods
  • PDS and Gasopods
  • PDS, Grav Trap and Gasopods
  • Torpedoes. Lots of torpedoes.
  • Ripping and Tearing with the default prawn suit
  • Ramming it with a Cyclops
  • Ramming it with a Camera Drone
  • Ampeels
