What is a Lynian?
Lynians are intelligent creatures that have their own culture, language, and tribes. They were introduced in the first generation of Monster Hunter. In Monster Hunter: World, they are NPCs that when unlocked/encountered, could be a great help for new players.
There are three types of Lynians in World: the Grimalkyne, Gajalaka and Boaboa. These three types of Lynians will be discussed in this guide.
There are three types of Lynians in World: the Grimalkyne, Gajalaka and Boaboa. These three types of Lynians will be discussed in this guide.
The Grimalkynes
The Grimalkynes are felyne/palico-like creatures that found in across the game. There are four tribes of Grimalkynes that found in the following locales:
- The Bugtrappers: Ancient Forest
- The Protectors: Wildspire Waste
- The Troupers: Coral Highlands
- The Plunderers: Rotten Vale
The Bugtrappers: Ancient Forest
The Bugtrapper Lair
The Protectors: Wildspire Waste
Unlike the Bugtrappers, the Protectors require a critical Bounty to be finished. Find three Protectors around the Wildspire Waste and capture them with your capture net. Once you've captured all three, they should be highlighted on the map, report back to the Grimalkyne at the Protector lair to unlock the Shieldspire.
The Troupers: Coral Highlands
Similar to the Protectors, you have to do a request by the Troupers in order to befriend them. You will get a four star Optional Quest to kill two Tzitzi-Ya-Ku. Once you complete this, you should be able to befriend the Troupers, and unlock the Coral Orchestra.
The Plunderers: Rotten Vale
You have to find a Plunderer in area 13, it only appears after a Odogaron has dragged over the Legiana corpse from Area 9. Then you have to chase the Plunderer with scout flies to a dead end in Area 15. Put out Raw Meat when told to by your Palico. After a few moments multiple Plunderers will come to eat the meat. To find their lair, change your map filter to Small Monsters and look for the Mosswine. You will find the lair nearby. You will unlock the Plunderblade from the Plunderers.
The Gajalaka: Elder's Recess
Note: Befriending Gajalaka doesn't stop them from attacking you.
Befriending them
Befriending them will unlock the Meowlotov Cocktail. In order to befriend the Gajalaka, you have to have befriended all the Grimalkynes. If you do, speak to the Lynian Researcher in Astera. Like the Protectors, you will get a Bounty. You will have to find 10 Gajalaka doodles. The following video will help you find them: Part 2
Once you've collected all the doodles, go back to the Lynian Researcher to get another bounty. You will need your Ghillie Mantle for this and for it to be night time. Look for the Lynian Researcher on the map, he will be in the Gajalaka Camp. The following video will help with the rest, best to watch instead of describe. This video also includes camp locations if you need those.

Tailraiders and Tailraider levels
Tailraiders are recruitable Lynians and small monsters to aid you in combat. Unlike the other Palico Equipment which uses one slot, the Tailraider Signal is always equipped. It calls for a tailraider to join you on command. When you befriend a tribe in each locale, you will be able to tame a small monster that lives in the locale.
You are able to level up each type of tailraider by fighting with them. Each tailraider has a max level of 10. As you raise the level of the tribe, their health and damage increases.
Raising each tailraider type to level 6 will unlock Pawswap.
- Jagras - Ancient Forest
- Kestodon - Wildspire Waste
- Shamos - Coral Highlands
- Girros - Rotten Vale
- Gastodon - Elder's Recess
- Wulg - Hoarfrost Reach
Tailraider Levels
Raising each tailraider type to level 6 will unlock Pawswap.
[Iceborne] Raider Rides
You can mount a small monster that lives in the locale your in using the raider ride mechanic. I won't talk about it much due to it being kind of useless. When mounting a small monster, it makes you sit through a animation. This animation makes you lose some seconds, you could've been at the monster's next location already if the animation wasn't played. But this is just my opinion, use it if you wish. Its unlocked by befriending the Lynians. It's one of those features that are forgotten.
[Iceborne] Pawswap
Pawswap is a mechanic I don't think alot of people know about. As stated in the section before, it is unlocked by raising tailraider levels to 6. Going to the lair of the locale's tribe will unlocked a waypoint for you to fast travel to. Which is very useful when getting to a monster that's not near a camp. These waypoints even work in multiplayer regardless if the quest host has it unlocked or not.

Pawswap lets you trade with the locale's residents in exchange for items. Some items are more desirable than others, leading to better items. You could get many types of items. But the most notable things you can get are:

Items that are desired by the Lynians (from what I know):

Treasure tips are randomly received by trading with the Lynians. These tips will lead to treasure locations. You HAVE to of received a treasure tip in order to collect the treasure. Some of the treasure is good, but it's not worth the time personally. This feature, atleast to me, only exists just for achievements.
What exactly is Pawswap?
- Rare Endemic Life (including achievement ones like Downy Crakes)
- Treasure Tips

Conclusion
I hope I have helped some people befriend the Lynians and understand what each palico tool does. Each tool has its purpose for certain situations, obviously.
